How to Make Edibles
Cannabis edibles are not only a convenient way to get high, but they also come in all different varieties depending on your taste. Making your own edibles is not as straight forward as crumbling your weed into your cookie mix and baking. There are some specific details you will need to be aware of when cooking your first batch.
If you have ever wondered how to make weed edibles, or are interested in giving it a try, we have compiled some tips to help you try it for the first time.
What Will You Need
Since we are making edibles, you will need some weed to begin with. If you making cookies or brownies, you may also need eggs, unsalted butter, vanilla extract, sugar, flour, baking soda and salt. For the mixing and baking part, you’ll need a cookie sheet, some parchment paper, a weed grinder, food processor, wooden spoon, cheesecloth and some pots.
One method of making edibles is by producing Cannabutter. Cannabutter is butter that is infused with marijuana. You will use this instead of regular butter in your recipe to make your edibles. Following along so far? Great. Let’s learn more about infusing marijuana and butter.
Pick Your Strain
When it comes to junk foods, picking the right snack depends on your mood or the social setting. Certain ones make more sense than others. The same can be said with different strains of cannabis. Before you start making your first batch of edibles ask yourself, will these cookies be for daytime? Am I making evening brownies? The effects of weed are different with every individual. Generally, the effects of Sativa’s are more energizing while Indica’s are more relaxing.
For a cookie that will jump start your day and have you ready to tackle anything, you could try making your edibles with: Mimosa, Duke Nukem or Magic Melon. Looking something to help you relax after a long day, or a chill evening, you might want to consider: Tom Ford Pink Kush, White Death Candy Cut, or Gelato Cookies.
Cooking Your Weed
In order to get high from your weed edibles, you will need to prep your weed so the elements in it that make you feel its effects are in your baked goods. In order to maintain the potency of the THC, you will need to heat your cannabis.
- Start by preheating your oven to 240ºF
- Use your grinder and break down your cannabis flower into smaller pieces and lay out on a cookie sheet.
You will want to leave some space between pieces and not have any overlapping - Bake your cookie sheet for 30 to 40 minutes. For the finished product we are looking for a golden brown color on the toasted flower.
- Let the flowers cool, place in a food processor and pulse it for a few seconds until you have a coarse ground consistency.
Butter Infusion
Now that you have your flower cooked and ground down, its time to make your Cannabutter. There are various different methods to make Cannabutter. We’re sharing a simple version that some have called the best Cannabutter in the US.
- Boil a quart of water in a saucepan.
- Once the water is boiling, throw in your butter and wait for it to completely melt.
- Add your ground marijuana and bring heat down to a simmer. We want to see the marijuana floating about 2 inches from the pan bottom.
- Cook the butter on low for approximately 3 hours. We want the consistency to start thickening at this point.
We are almost done with our Cannabutter. Take a bowl and line it with cheesecloth. Pour your mixture into the bowl, squeeze and strain the Cannabutter through the cheesecloth. Chill the Cannabutter in the fridge for at least an hour. It should take on the consistency of a spread at this point. You now have a cannabis infused butter you can add to your favourite cookie or brownie recipe.
How Much Weed Do You Need?
How much do you need to use in your recipes? Marijuana strains will vary in potency, we are basing this portion on the average version of about 10% THC. For cooking or baking at home we can assume every 1 gram of cannaibs has 100mg of THC. So if your Cannabutter was made with 7 grams (1/4 oz), this would result in 700mg total THC. Next, lets say your cookie recipe yields 60 cookies, then each cookie would have a strength of approximately 11 mg each. First time users could cut the cookies into quarters and see how the effects are after an hour has passed.
As we said in the beginning, this is just a brief overview and one method of making your own edibles. Once you get more experienced, you can try other ways to utilize your Cannabutter. Have fun baking!
